Interview With SHOUTOUT LA!

Founder of Raema Studios, Rachel A. Hemsley is a published author, screenwriter, producer, director, and script supervisor based in Los Angeles, California. At 15 years old, Rachel’s first children’s adventure book, Emma of Winds, was published by Heart to Heart Publishing. As a young author, she visited elementary schools around Southern California giving inspirational talks to students on the subject of creative writing.

She graduated from Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film And Media Arts with a Bachelor of the Arts in Screenwriting, along with writing credit on 6 short films produced by that time. Several of the films were shown at film festivals around the country, one of which having won a College Television Award in the children’s category.

Along with screenwriting, Rachel has worked for six years (and counting) as a script supervisor; credited on award winning short films, web series such as Stargate: Origins for MGM, feature films such as When Jeff Tried To Save The World starring Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) and Jim O’Hair (Parks & Recreation), as well as commercials for Amazon, Google, and Disney. She has also taught several script supervising workshops at Chapman University at the invitation of the Chair of the Film Division at the time, Eric Young – a former Disney executive and distinguished producer.

In 2018, Rachel began directing and producing – starting with music videos for up and coming artists, short films, and eventually creating Youtube series and promotional videos for Disney, Mattel, Warner Bros, DC Comics, and Google.

Currently working freelance in both the Youtube space, as well as the narrative side of the film industry, Rachel is constantly creating, producing, directing, and acting in projects large and small — including pitching several television and Youtube series, as well as feature films in every genre.

Humanity is built on storytelling. I’m sure there’s even a story explaining that somewhere.

Everyone has a story to tell — and I have many. And all of them are born from the single, beautiful question: “What If?” What if a girl was raised by pirates? What if an action film cliché was turned on its head? What if the impossible was possible?

Whether as a screenwriter, director, producer, author, script supervisor, or even actress, I believe each story and project starts with a spark of human connection, and is brought to life with the collaboration of passionate people. Telling stories in a way that sparks the magic within people in a fresh, invigorating way is my mission. And “where there’s a will, there’s a way” is my conviction.
